Black History Month 2021

Friday 01-10-2021 - 11:00

Black History Month returns to campus this October with an inspiring array of events following Welcome Week

Black History Month takes place every October across the UK presenting an important opportunity for us to focus on the often overlooked and distorted black histories, heritage and culture. We'll be marking Black History Month this October with a range of student-led activities, celebrating black excellence and challenging systems of oppression.

Working with community partners, lecturers and society groups, SU Racial and Ethnic Minority Students' Officer, Max Kafula, has put together a calendar of events to inspire, educate and entertain. Events are open to all students and will be taking place both in-person and virtually.

Speaking about BHM, organiser Max Kafula said:

“This year's Black History month is going to be one of the biggest we have done so far! With more cultural and educational events planned like never before! In collaboration with ACS, we created events that are designed to be the most inclusive, honest, reflective and creative environment to share our history.”

We’ll be starting this year’s series of events at 18:00 on Monday, October 11th with 'What are Microaggressions?', an informal seminar in which Max Kafula will dive into the topics of microaggressions and their impact on mental health.

Check out the full Black History Month Calendar below and follow the REM Students' Officer & Lancaster SU to keep up to date.
