Lancaster University Students’ Union's Children & Young People’s Partnership recently paired up with the Chinese Students & Scholars Association (CSSA) & Association of British and Chinese University Students Society (ABACUS) to support Ellel St. John’s Primary School with their Chinese New Year Celebrations.
CSSA & ABACUS prepared and delivered 7 workshops delivering some amazing, informative, and creative presentations. They also led discussions about the Chinese New Year celebrations, including their history and how they are celebrated.
ABACUS President, Margaret Liu said:
"On the 11th of February, volunteers from ABACUS went to Ellel Primary school and delivered a lesson to the Year 6 class on Chinese Food in relation to Chinese New Year. The volunteers enjoyed the experience of spreading Chinese Culture and interacting with the children. Throughout the lesson, the children were really enthusiastic and curious to learn more, this event was brilliant to deliver and the volunteers found the experience rather precious and valuable. We are happy to have future collaborations with Ellel St. Johns Primary School."
The workshops then offered an opportunity to participate in various craft activities. The children were taught how to write Chinese numbers and characters, make lanterns, and do several origami folding techniques.
CSSA Volunteer, Xiyuan Zhang said:
"We could feel the welcome of the children and teachers when we walked into the classroom, and we were also surprised by the enthusiasm of the children for Chinese culture. In a word, I had the pleasure of having two exciting lessons with these kids. "
