Last year, we opened the event to students within the School of Computing and Communications as a trial to see whether there would be interest in an end-of-year social event. Around 30 students attended, and the feedback was extremely positive, with many students saying they would like to see the BBQ become an annual event.
Following the success of last year’s BBQ, we were keen to make this year’s event even bigger. This year, the BBQ has been opened up to the wider Faculty of Science and Technology, including students from Engineering, Chemistry, the School of Computing and Communications, Mathematical Sciences, Lancaster Environment Centre, Natural Sciences, Physics, and Psychology.
The event will take place on Wednesday 10th June, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at the Sports Centre BBQs. It is intended to be a relaxed BBQ and picnic-style event, giving students the chance to unwind, catch up with friends, and celebrate the end of the academic year.
Academic reps and I across the Faculty of Science and Technology have been working together to organise this year’s BBQ, with a focus on making the event accessible, enjoyable, and manageable for a larger number of students. We have worked with LUSU to arrange gazebos for shade, picnic blankets for students to use, and a bring-your-own-food format.
By making the BBQ a bring-your-own-food event, students can attend without needing to buy a ticket or pay for food in advance. Instead, students can simply bring the food and drinks they would like to have on the day. This does not have to be BBQ food; students are also welcome to bring picnic food if they would prefer.
To help the BBQ run safely, some of the students helping to host the event will be completing food hygiene training and will be overseeing the BBQs on the day. We will also have disposable BBQs available for anyone with dietary requirements, allergies, or preferences where their food cannot come into contact with meat.
We are also pleased to share that we have partnered with SugarHouse for this year’s event. SugarHouse will be continuing the theme of the BBQ with a Summer Fest night after the event, and they have also provided merchandise to be handed out at the BBQ.
The event is not only for students within the Faculty of Science and Technology; friends are welcome too. The aim is to create a relaxed and friendly celebration where students can mark the end of the year together.
The BBQ is free to attend, but students are asked to register their interest in advance so we can get an idea of numbers. You can do so here.
I look forward to seeing many of you there for an afternoon of food, music, and end-of-year celebrations.
