After months of school strikes as part of the Fridays for the Future movement, catalysed by Greta Thunberg, students called on everyone to get involved in this Friday's Global Climate Strikes.

Alongside millions around the world, the Students' Union took part in today's historical strike. The Global Climate Strikes demand climate justice and emergency action to tackle the crisis before us. Officers, students and staff showed their support at the Alexandra Square demonstration, where attendees heard speeches, shared concerns and formed a giant human globe to be seen from above.

Following the campus action many travelled to town to support the local school students and wider community, including SU Officers Lewis (Campaigns and Communications) and Grishma (Welfare and Community).

Speaking at the strikes Lewis said: "I wanted to strike today to support the fight against climate change. It was great to see so many students taking part and I hope even more will get involved in the future"

Grishma said: “Environmental issues have been neglected for too long which is why I supported the strike today. It needs to be added to the political agenda because climate change is happening and it’s happening now"

This action follows the Executive Committee's recent decision to support the petition for the university to declare and respond to the climate emergency. You can sign the student petition here.
