Lancaster University has been named number one for Sports Clubs and Societies in the UK
A study has placed Lancaster in join first with Oxford Univesity for its Sports and Societies offering. The league table considers the range of sporting opportunities available and the number of sports teams on offer. With 81 registered sports teams, Lancaster came out top in the UK.
Following their analysis of the top 100 ranked universities in the UK, PureGym said: "Lancaster and its 81 sports clubs and societies offer the most sporting opportunities within the UK for students looking to get active alongside their studies. Each year the annual intervarsity competition, The War of the Roses, between Lancaster University and the University of York takes place; with 50 different sports and more than 100 fixtures."
Lancaster also features in the Top 10 UK Universities with the Most Sports Teams Per Student "proving to be a strong contender all round for sporty students who want a variety of options and a solid chance of joining their society of choice."
The students' union is immensely proud to offer such a wide range of opportunities for students looking to take part in society and sporting activities. Opportunities such as these add immeasurable value to the university experience. From creating social hubs and chances to meet new people to providing fun ways to stay fit and healthy, sports clubs and societies are at the very heart of Lancaster University Students' Union.

"I have always known that for such a small institution and staff team we support an impressive amount of sport and physical activity for our students but to have it officially recognised is amazing! BUCS is often the main thing Universities get 'judged' on for sport so it is really nice to have a big organisation take the time to look at the bigger picture. I hope our students are as proud as we are as it wouldn't be possible without the 1000's of volunteer hours that they dedicate week in and week out to provide such an incredible range of opportunities!! Huge thanks to everyone who puts the time and effort in to make each and every one of these sport and physical activity sessions happen, long may they all continue."

"I'm over the moon to hear we've been recognised as the top place for sports and societies. The Students' Union works really hard to create the best student experience possible for our societies and sports. Societies and sports will play a huge role in the post-pandemic recovery as students want a sense of normality. Myself and Paul, the VP Sports, work really hard with our amazing societies and sport staff teams to deliver. It's great to see the Students' Union recognised for our sport and societies work twice in a month!"
This week over 50 clubs and societies will be giving you the opportunity to give it a go at our enormous Freshers' Fest! So why not come down and see what all the fuss is about? Whether you fancy trying rock climbing or rugby, there's something for everyone!
