For the first time in 50 years, Lancaster University Boat Club will be competing Henley Royal Regatta! Lancaster Senior Men's IV's, Tabitha Palmer (Cox), Matt Watson, Luke Mullen, Hamish Rea and Aaron Cherry have seen a year of hard work pay off after they qualified for Henley 2018 where they will be racing in the Price Albert Challenge Cup.
The Regatta is a huge event, which is oversubscribed every year. There are 16 places available in the category with some teams allowed straight through due to success early in the season. Lancaster Men's IV's had to earn their place in a time trail with sees the fast 5 of 24 go through.
Lancaster University Boat Club, the oldest club at Lancaster the original Roses event, have qualified for a place at Henley Royal Regatta. Henley, one of if not the most prestigious regattas in the world sees competitors from all over the world, including Olympians compete over 5 days in the Thames.
It is a phenomenal achievement for the club and is the first time Lancaster has qualified for the event since 1968. Club captain Alex Brogan has said, “I cannot express how phenomenal it is for a crew to qualify for this race, it really is the biggest stage available to clubs like us.”
Lancaster University Students’ Union has been able to contribute £1760 to the club to cover travel, accommodating, boat hire, fees and other costs but events like these come at a huge cost for those competing and the club have appealed to members, alumni and supporters of the club to sponsor the team.
If you can offer any support to the team for this event or future events please email lubcclubcaptain@gmail.com
