On Saturday February 17 Vice-President Education Hannah Laycock hosted the first ever Student Education Conference at Lancaster.

The event, which took place over a day, hosted sessions on myth-busting grad schemes, debates around the look and practicality of study space, mental health, value for money in education and more.

Over 100 students, most of whom were academic reps, attended the conference which aimed to open up discussion around some of the bigger issues faced at Lancaster and in higher education in general and perhaps shine light on areas that guests had never considered before.

Hannah said, “A HUGE thank you to everyone who came and contributed to our first ever Student Education Conference! Over 100 students attended and got stuck in with sessions ranging from decolonising the curriculum, what great study spaces look like to you, and a debate on free speech in universities. We had the NUS Vice President (Higher Education) Amatey Doku contribute to the day and lead a session which many people engaged with. The Free Speech Debate was productive and challenging, and proved that students at Lancaster aren’t afraid to tackle topics that are global headline news!  There was a fantastic buzz around all day, and we had lots of laughs. Don’t forget to look out for your Academic Reps around campus, they’re sporting some fantastic hoodies!”
