Students’ union Vice-President (Education) Bee Morgan has challenged the university to deliver a series of improvements to teaching and learning.
The ‘Top 10 Uni? Top 10 Demands’ campaign highlights 10 key ways the university can improve the academic experience for Lancaster students.
The demands are:
1. My lectures are recorded and promptly accessible online as standard
2. Feedback on my work that is on time, useful and before my next deadline
3. A timetable that suits my work-life balance, stopping at 6pm with Wednesday afternoons free
4. My class sizes to be manageable, and not grow beyond staff and space capacity at the expense of my learning
5. My slides and digital resources uploaded online at least 24 hours in advance
6. My group projects to be fairly marked including peer assessment, so I’m confident I receive the grade I deserve
7. An academic tutor I see regularly and can form a relationship with, who helps me improve my standard of work and offers careers advice
8. My assessments to be spread evenly to prevent unnecessary strain on my mental health
9. My submissions to be online or printing free where paper is compulsory
10. My degree curriculum to reflect the breadth of my topic and diverse culture
Bee said: “Lancaster may be a Top 10 university, but I don’t believe that it currently offers a Top 10 academic experience to its students. “The academic staff we have here at Lancaster are outstanding, but in order for our students to make the most of their time with them we need greater investment in teaching space and digital technologies.
“It’s also vital that university management ensures academic staff have the capacity to give students the feedback and support they need. Marking, tutoring, and developing and sharing resources all take time and as the university continues to grow it is vital that workloads of our academic staff remain manageable.”
