What is ECOChallenge?

ECOChallenge is LUSU Green’s flagship sustainability innovation challenge, delivered in partnership with the 9 Colleges and Work in Progress. But don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what past participants have to say:

Boost your Knowledge, Skills and Career Prospects!

Dynamic duo Alex Waterer and Emily Adams, winners of ECOChallenge 2023 from County College, created the innovative ECOEats project. They emphasize how participating in ECOChallenge helped develop career-boosting skills beyond their degrees.

Alex, a BSc Environmental Science student currently on a placement with the Met Office, shared:

“ECOChallenge gave me opportunities to develop skills that I wouldn’t have gained through my degree alone. From ideation and presentation to project delivery, I tackled real-world sustainability issues and expanded my career options. The experience was pivotal in securing my placement, and I’m now applying these skills during my year in industry.”

Meanwhile, Emily, a BSc Geography graduate now working with the UK Polar Network, explained:

“ECOChallenge was my first chance to solve real-world environmental problems and see the measurable impact we could have. Working in a team helped us grow in confidence, and the experience shaped my career path. It inspired me to focus on sustainability, influencing the roles and opportunities I’ve pursued ever since.”

Make an Impact – Win or Lose!

Even if you don’t win, ECOChallenge is an unforgettable experience that can still open doors.

Morgan Nielson, a Physics graduate and now a Sustainability Consultant at Small World Consulting, reflected:

“Taking part helped me transition into a sustainable career. Even though my team didn’t win, the work we did still has lasting impact on campus years later!”

Phoebe Teasdale, a US Fulbright Scholar and LUSU Green Student Leader, described how the challenge shaped her perspective:

“Completing ECOChallenge 2024 was a transformative experience. It was my first exposure to the practical impact small sustainability projects can have at a university level—and how they can inspire global change.”
