‘JCR’ stands for ‘Junior Common Room’, and every undergraduate college elects a group of students to organise socials and events, plan campaigns and activities and generally represent the interests of your college members. Each JCR Exec has a President and a selection of other officers with specific remits like welfare, sport and socials.
Each JCR is part of the students' union, and we provide training, support and funding throughout your time in office to ensure you're able to fulfill your role to the best of your ability. We know you love your colleges and this is a great chance to be part of steering how they're run.
Here’s a quick look at all the things you could get involved in if you’re elected…
Your JCR Execs are here to welcome new students from the moment you arrive at Lancaster – organising your Fresher Reps and running loads of events and activities to help you settle in to life at Lancaster. Here’s Furness College giving the traditional greeting to new students on arrivals day.
Looking after your welfare is important to all our JCR Execs. This term, County College has organised special events to support students who are experiencing homesickness during their first weeks at university.
A highlight of first term for many colleges is the Winter Ball. JCRs are involved in organsing these events, like this one in Cartmel College.
Your JCR Execs organise loads of other great social activities throughout the year. Pendle College's LipSync Challenge has been a popular highlight of recent years!
Sport is a powerful force for bringing people together, and some longstanding friendly college rivalries have developed over the years. Lancaster’s original two colleges, Bowland and Lonsdale, take each other on in the annual Founders Tournament, one of the best weekends of the university year!
Talking of big Lancaster traditions, Extravs are legendary end of year parties organised by the JCRs in each college during the last week of summer term. Here’s the amazing atmosphere in Fylde College at this year’s Yabba-Strava-Doo.
At the end of your time at Lancaster you’ll graduate with your college. Being on the JCR Exec helps you to create a community atmosphere that’s really special. Here’s Grizedale College celebrating another year of academic success.
Don’t miss out on your chance to be part of something special in your college! If you have questions email elections@lancastersu.co.uk.
