Last night marked the annual British Universities & Colleges Sport Awards, held at UWE to 'celebrate the achievements of BUCS institutions from their student athletes, to their staff and volunteers'.
Our Rugby girls bought home The BUCS Club of the Year award for the first time in Lancaster's history.
BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) received over 100 nominations for the award from across the UK, from which just three were shortlisted. Shortlisted teams included Oxford University Basketball Club, University College London Women's Hockey Team and Lancaster's Women's Rugby Union Team.
But it was Lancaster who scooped the trophy in recognition of their incredible commitment to the sport and outstanding contributions to the wider community. In order to be considered for The Club of the Year award, a team must demonstrate 'a commitment to development areas of their club, resulting in increased participation, inclusion and diversity' and our Rugby girls proved it possible to do this and more.
Just last month the Rugby girls teamed up with Green Lancaster to work with local primary schools to encourage healthy eating and sporting activity.
Speaking about the event LUWRUFC said: "It was a great experience for the LUWRUFC to engage with students on healthy and eco-friendly living. We especially loved talking to them about sport, health and their goals for when they're older!"
In response to winning BUCS Club of the Year the team said:
"Winning the BUCS Club of The Year award is a honour and something we certainly never expected. There are so many sports clubs both at Lancaster University and across the country who are working incredibly hard and doing amazing things to help develop and improve the sports experience for students. To have been nominated and to win against such a high standard of competition only makes this more special. A special thanks to all the students who have engaged with the club this year at any of our events and to various departments of the Students’ Union who have supported us with their time and patience. As a club we are incredibly proud of the journey we have had this year but even more excited at the feeling that we have only scratched the surface and that we have so much more that we can do to contribute to women’s and inclusive sport at Lancaster University and in the wider local community."
We couldn't be prouder of the Rugby girls and all involved in bringing home this historic win.
Congratulations Team Lancaster!
