You’ve had a few weeks at home, you’ve got those Uni blues, so here are some highlights to see you through.
We hope you've enjoyed reminiscing the last year as much as we have. Only the Summer Term recap remains! And of course, we saved the best till last.
Summer Term
1. ROSES
As always, the Roses weekend did not disappoint. We brought a sea of red to York and that indescribable Roses spirit.
Despite not winning the overall battle this year, our sports teams delivered a stellar performance and did Lancaster proud. The Roses rivalry between York and Lancaster is based on a historic battle for the throne in the 1400's. As both counties are represented by a rose symbol (York in white, Lancaster in Red), the war became known as the War of the Roses and still holds playful significance today in the form of sporting competitions such as this one. If you're joining team Lancaster this year, be sure to put Roses 2020 in your calendar and prepare for the biggest home tournament yet.
2. EXTRAVS
Lancaster's legendary end of year college parties. With live music, extrav-agant themes (hence the name) and 8 colleges to choose from... this is the start of your summer.
You can relive it all RIGHT HERE
3. STUDENT MEDIA AWARDS
The event was a celebration of every media team's hard work and dedication over the last year, as each and every member has volunteered their time to provide an invaluable service to the student body. From hard hitting political pieces to relentless Roses coverage and everything in-between. 14 prizes were up for grabs for the 41 nominees, plus a surprise 'Media Team of the Year' Award, presented by the VP of Campaigns and Communications.
Islay Grant the 2019/19 Officer for Campaigns and Communications said: “It was amazing to celebrate all of the fantastic work that our student media teams have achieved over the past year. They work so hard to support SU activities such as Roses and the FTO elections, whilst developing their skill sets, making friends and making themselves more employable”
4. SUGARFEST
The first-ever Sugarfest kicked off the end of exam celebrations in style. From headline acts such as BBCR1's Chris Stark
and Melody Kane, to free prosecco and Tipple cocktails. Sugarfest was the Sugarhouse's huge thank you party to each and every one of you for your support throughout the year.
5. WOMENS RUGBY NAMED CLUB OF THE YEAR
Our Rugby girls bought home The BUCS Club of the Year award for the first time in Lancaster's history.
BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) received over 100 nominations for the award from across the UK, from which just three were shortlisted. Shortlisted teams included Oxford University Basketball Club, University College London Women's Hockey Team and Lancaster's Women's Rugby Union Team.
But it was Lancaster who scooped the trophy in recognition of their incredible commitment to the sport and outstanding contributions to the wider community. In order to be considered for The Club of the Year award, a team must demonstrate 'a commitment to development areas of their club, resulting in increased participation, inclusion and diversity' and our Rugby girls proved it possible to do this and more.
In response to winning BUCS Club of the Year the team said:
"Winning the BUCS Club of The Year award is a honour and something we certainly never expected. There are so many sports clubs both at Lancaster University and across the country who are working incredibly hard and doing amazing things to help develop and improve the sports experience for students. To have been nominated and to win against such a high standard of competition only makes this more special. A special thanks to all the students who have engaged with the club this year at any of our events and to various departments of the Students’ Union who have supported us with their time and patience. As a club we are incredibly proud of the journey we have had this year but even more excited at the feeling that we have only scratched the surface and that we have so much more that we can do to contribute to women’s and inclusive sport at Lancaster University and in the wider local community."
We couldn't be prouder of the Rugby girls and all involved in bringing home this historic win.
