What is the Climate Conference?

The Climate Conference is a dynamic and collaborative event for students, aimed at creating change on sustainability at Lancaster University. The climate conference will be categorised into key themes, linked to the climate crisis, such as Food, Biodiversity and Waste.

What’s in it for me?

  • Build your cv: Gain sustainability knowledge and skills

  • Learn about key climate challenges facing Lancaster University and how this relates to the climate crisis

  • Collaborate with students to create a set of demands to the University.

  • Free plant-based food!

What will happen after the conference?

The demands will be written in the form of a report and presented to the Vice-Chancellor and Head of Sustainability by the LUSU Sustainability Committee.

What happened at the 2025 Climate Conference?

Last year, the 5 demands were:

1. Expansion of Don’t Ditch It, Donate It project to be all-year round.

2. More plant-based options on campus – cheap eats in every University diners.

3. Sustainability induction to all new students

4. More grassroots action – increased resource for Grounds Team, LUSU Green and Environmental societies.

5. Rewilding campus and Forrest Hills.

What’s happened since then? Some things that have happened include:

  • A sustainability induction is being made by the Sustainability Team, with the hope to launch in 2026/27

  • LUSU Green have been able to deliver more events with the grounds team (11 this year in total). We’ve also been able to provide greater funding via the Sports, Societies and Sustainability Competition for grassroots efforts from students.

  • The majority of Forrest Hills is now covered in trees, having volunteers planted them since 2018. So now the focus is on tree management. We ran a session with the Grounds Team which helped remove over 200 tree guards, helping the trees to grow
