What we do
The Lancaster University Mathematics Association (LUMA) is the student-led body at the heart of the School of Mathematical Sciences. We support, connect, and represent every maths student, from their first day at Lancaster through to graduation.
LUMA runs a variety of academic, social, and professional events designed to strengthen our community, support student learning, and create opportunities for personal and career development. We also act as the voice of students within the department through our representation at staff-student committees.
Our recurring activities include:
-
Maths Café
A weekly social event to hang out with your fellow mathematicians. Whether you're in the mood for some light conversation or you're stuck on a tough proof, Maths Café is the place to be!
-
Socials
From quizzes and board game nights to winter and summer balls, LUMA organises events that bring our community together.
-
Peer Mentoring
A new initiative where upper-year students support first-years academically and socially, helping to build connections across year groups.
-
Academic and Career Events
Including guest lectures, revision workshops, collaborations with Gradcracker and professional societies, and career-focused panels.

Joining LUMA is easy, just use the big 'Join this Group' button on this page! Once you join, we will also add you to our group on Teams.
