About us
Who are we?
■ Student Comment and News was established in 1967, making SCAN one of the longest-running student publications in Europe.
■ We are a newspaper run entirely by students, for students, and it is a space to write about the topics and issues you care about.
■ We aim to publish one print edition each term, alongside articles throughout the year, with opportunities for writers, photographers, editors, illustrators, designers and more.
■ We are an award-winning publication: SCAN has been shortlisted at the Student Publication Awards and, in 2023, was named the UK and Northern Ireland’s second-best student sport section.
Your experience
Why get involved?
■ Build a portfolio: publish articles, photography, illustrations or design work and gain practical experience for the media and creative industries.
■ Meet new people: make friends with students from beyond your course, college and usual circles.
■ Improve your writing: sharpen your skills, try new formats and develop a style that feels like your own.
■ Write about what interests you: contribute to News, Comment, Lifestyle, Culture, Music, Screen, Creative Writing or Sport.
No experience required... we mean it!
You do not need to have written for a newspaper, used a professional camera or edited before. We will help you get started.

Membership costs just £8 for the whole year. Join through the Lancaster University Students’ Union page, then keep an eye on our socials and contributor opportunities.
