About Us
We are the Lancaster University Squash Club! As Club of the Year 2023, and a Lancaster University Focus Sport as of 2024, we aspire to grow our club and create engaging training sessions, socials and competitive opportunities for players of all ability. Whoever you are and whatever your ability, come and have a go at this unique sport! Our society has 89 active members, and we encourage anyone to come along and get to know fellow squash players - everyone is invited!
Competitive Players
The BUCS Squad
For those who wish to play squash competitively, we operate three teams within the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) leagues, where you can proudly represent Lancaster University Squash Club and battle it out against other universities across the North-West. With 2 Men's teams and 1 Women's team playing matches on Wednesday afternoons, there is plenty of space for all those interested in attending try-outs at the beginning of the year. The BUCS Squad is made up of 18 people (6 individuals for each 5-person team). Training for all BUCS players takes place twice a week on Sunday and Monday evenings, with our Sunday sessions coached by an external England Squash Coach and our Monday sessions ran by our captains. The Men's 1st and 2nd teams play in Division 2A Northern, and the Women's 1st in Division 1A Northern.
Regional Leagues
We have two teams mostly comprised of our male and female BUCS players competing in the North-West Counties Squash League (https://www.nwcsl.org/)! These matches are played on Thursday evenings, alternating between home and away games against teams in the Lancashire region. Individuals in the regional leagues teams have the opportunity to gain further match experience, test themselves out against different styles of squash, and enjoy time on the road with their fellow teammates!
The 1st team plays in Division 3 Central North, and the 2nd team plays in Division 4 Central North.
Roses
Once a year, Lancaster University faces off against its biggest rival - University of York. In Summer Term, players from both the universities compete in a variety of sports to win the annual Roses tournament, the biggest inter-university tournament in Europe. In squash, two men's and two women's teams, each team consisting of 5 players, compete against York over Roses weekend to gain points towards the overall Roses competition. In the past 3 years, Lancaster has succeeded in annihilating York in squash and we intend to do it a 4th consecutive time in 2025!
Development Players
Men's and Women's Development Squad
Whether you're a keen squash player wanting to work your way into a BUCS team, or you're a complete beginner wanting to try a new sport, our development squads are designed for you to get on court, improve your game and, most importantly, have fun! There are three men's and two women's squads split by ability. Each squad has a weekly Sunday training session led by members of the Club Executive Committee as well as BUCS members who can pass on their skill to those who want to learn. Our development sessions not only allow members to play against players of your skill level, but also prepare you for the frequent competitive opportunities we offer such as the termly Dev Cup or College League! It is also an excellent way for players to challenge for BUCS Squad positions in the future, or to earn an invitation to train with the teams.
Social squash
Our social squash sessions are open to all BUCS and development players regardless of ability - this is an opportunity for players to come down to the courts, grab a racket and have fun with the other members. These relaxed sessions encourage members to come down and play squash however they like to rather than committing to a planned training session ran by other members. Courts are booked for social squash once a week for two hours, alternating between Tuesday and Thursday afternoons each week. Social squash is a great way to meet new people with a similar interest that aren't necessarily in your team or training squad, and we've found that it's an excellent stress-reliever from the continuous studying as as a university student!
College league
Last year our college league was reintroduced for the first time in 17 years attracting over 60 participants, and it will be returning in October 2024 bigger and better than ever! Each college will have a designated captain and their team will compete in fortnightly matches against the other colleges on Tuesday evenings. This is a great opportunity to put into practice all the skills acquired from the training sessions and social squash and engage in friendly competition while representing your college. College league is even designed for those with little to no competitive experience who want to get on court, learn how to play and mark matches by official rules, and compete against players of similar ability! Congratulations to Furness College who were last year's winners - which college is destined to be victorious this year?
