Welcome to the University of Lancaster Music Society, better known as ULMS! We’re a friendly and inclusive society and welcome anyone with an interest in playing and performing music!
Started by the head of the Music Department in 1979, we now have a Big Band, Brass Band, Choir, Orchestra, String Orchestra, Swing Group, Wind Band and various ‘small groups’- any member of ULMS can join any of the ensembles, with auditions only used for key seats.
If you want to play a certain instrument or style of music, or set up a band/ensemble that we don’t already have, we can help you to do that! Our Small Groups Rep works with musicians to make sure they get the opportunity to play the music they want.
Besides the music, we also run various socials throughout the year. From our traditional annual socials, such as the Carolling Bar Crawl and the Summer Term BBQ, we also run games nights and film nights for a more chilled out vibe. In addition, we have an annual Christmas Ball and Summer Ball for a chance to dress up and have a classy night with friends!
Fancy learning an instrument? We have a Project Teach Music (PTM) scheme for those that want to learn an instrument at an affordable price, with ULMS members as the teachers! Our PTM Coordinator can help match you with a teacher to start your music journey.
We have lots to offer, so come join in the fun!
Membership is open to all members of Lancaster University and its associated colleges and environs. If you would like any more information about us, you can email our Secretary on secretary@ulms.org.uk.
We put on a number of concerts throughout the year, with our biggest being our annual ‘Summer Showcase’ concert in the summer – a chance for every ensemble to show what they can do, with a finale piece involving every member of the society. Each year there’s also a Christmas Concert, Concerto Concert, WindBrass Concert, and Choir & Small Groups Concert, and individual ensembles often set up and play their own gigs throughout the year.
