What is Wing Chun?
Wing Chun is a style of southern Chinese martial arts. It relies on scientific principles and experimentation in order to train, with the goal of learning effective self-defence. It is a striking art, with a focus on control and close-combat.
One of our core principles as a martial art is fighting in the most efficient way possible, while still staying safe; the process of experimentation we use allows us to do this, and lets people tailor their style to what works best for them.
I’m smaller/weaker than average, can I still learn?
Since Wing Chun was originally invented and tailored by a woman, the martial art is designed specifically with smaller people in mind. While it can still be learnt and practiced by taller people, they are not necessarily at an automatic advantage as they might be in other martial arts.
Wing Chun also uses a more relaxed style of fighting, so while strength can be useful, the martial art focuses on taking advantage of speed and dexterity over brute force.
Do you have Weapons training?
Wing Chun traditionally makes use of two weapons, the Butterfly Swords and the Longpole.
While we do not yet have any equipment for weapons training, we are hoping to purchase some this coming year, so it is likely we will be introducing training for Butterfly Swords. Since Wing Chun is focused on self-defence, and weapons build upon unarmed combat, they are usually only taught at a higher level.
How much does it cost?
Your first session at the society is free. After this, the training sessions cost £3 a week or £20 per term.
If you have any questions about this, please ask.
Anything else I should know before joining?
If you can, you should wear loose clothing, and bring some drinking water with you.
