One of the perks of being a student is that there are loads of businesses out there offering you discounts and deals. Don't be shy - claim your student discount to make your money go further!
One of the best ways for Lancaster students to save money is by buying a Purple card. This is the students' union's own discount scheme and we work with local and national businesses to bring you a huge range of regular discounts and one off-deals - check out what's on offer.
Totum This is the discount scheme offered by the National Union of Students, with loads of great deals and offers with big national firms.
National discount schemes There is a multitude of student discount memberships available, all with their own benefits. Purple card is great for using locally, but if you want discounts further afield make sure you get a Totum card or search online for other popular schemes.
Discount vouchers It’s always good practice to check for any discount vouchers on offer. A good place to check for discounts is through this Discount Vouchers page and the High Street Sales diary through MoneySavingExpert.com. Another great website if you're looking for bargains is Groupon.
Reward Cards If you don’t take full advantage of rewards cards, by the time you graduate you will regret it. There are loads of loyalty schemes out there - Tesco Clubcard, Nectar card (Sainsbury's) and Boots Advantage card are among the most popular. Consider sharing an account with mates to reach pay-out thresholds faster.
Freebies Both SaveTheStudent and MoneySavingExpert have extensive freebie lists that you can take full advantage of. MoneySavingExpert also have a Hot Bargains deals page for more freebies. Who doesn’t like a freebie or two, or several?
Cash Back You can get cash back on almost anything you buy. Every time you buy online, get some of your money back by learning how to use cashback sites, as described by SaveTheStudent.org. Topcashback, Quidco and Swagbucks are worth joining and you'll be amazed at just how much you get back. But it's not just online shopping that offers cashback. Free food (and occasionally some cleaning products and pet food, too) can be nabbed through supermarket cashback apps! You could also check out EasyFundraising.org.uk, a site which helps raise money for your clubs and societies when you shop online.
Amazon Prime Student If you buy things from amazon regularly buying an Amazon Prime Student membership will probably pay for itsefl in terms of shipping charge savings. It costs £39 a year for membership (compared with £79 for a standard membership). You need to sign up with your university email account. It is also possible to get six months free trial (remember to cancel membership if you don’t want to continue with the service). You can also take advantage of the MoneySavingExpert’s Amazon Discount Finder tool. It allows you to find heavily discounted items typically hidden on the Amazon website.
